GameZone: COD4: Review (PS3): 9.6 CoD4 is the best in a long and storied franchise. This is next-gen gaming in every sense of the phrase. This is an excellent game.
IGN AU writes: "War really shouldn't be this much fun. Since when did getting pinned under a hailstorm of enemy fire, listening to rounds zip within millimetres of your face, become such a great way to spend our spare time? But in Call of Duty 4 (COD4), it most certainly is, and the more realistic it has become, the more we can't wait to go and risk our virtual lives all over again. COD4 shows ably why Infinity Ward is the master crafter of the shooter genre, building and layering above the foundation it so wonderfully created with the original Call of Duty."
Gamespot 9/10 "The single-player campaign is over in a flash, but the high quality of that campaign and its terrific multiplayer options make Call of Duty 4 a fantastic package."
COD4 to be highest rated PS3 game yet The first Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare reviews are in and things are looking very good indeed. At the time of writing, the PS3 version of the multiformat title has an average score of 95%, topping those of Oblivion and Ratchet and Clank Future and looking set to make it the highest scoring PS3 game to date. Not one review is currently offering less than a 90. Great news then for shooter fans who might have been feeling a little bit starved of good warfare action for the last couple of months. It is worth noting that the Xbox 360 version currently has pipped it with a 96% average and has received more reviews, but generally it sounds like the quality is near identical on each.
Game Informer Scores Call of Duty 4 a perfect 10/10 "Start to finish, online or off, Call of Duty 4 is solid gold. Some might decry the single-player's short length or that it's more of the same, but its amazing quality and Arcade mode more than make up for it. Infinity Ward has delivered on every front, and there is no question in my mind that this is the best action shooter I have ever played."
Infinity Ward Delivers - COD4 Shines On All Platforms
1UP reviews Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - final score: 9.6 By hitting fast-forward on the Call of Duty franchise by 60 years, developer Infinity Ward is taking a chance. Call of Duty 4's subtitle "Modern Warfare" implies a lot in this day and age, and applying the series' famed qualities to a theater of war that's far less fictional than some might be comfortable with could easily go wrong. It was one thing when games based on the Vietnam War briefly appeared -- the debate then was based on a matter of timeliness ("Is it too soon?") and the controversial nature of that conflict. Imagine then, the walking-on-eggshells approach a developer must take to base a game on a highly controversial war that's happening right now. Bad writing and shallow, stereotypical characters could cheapen the experience, not just for the general game-playing public, but particularly for those whose lives are currently affected by the ongoing situation in the Middle East. It's an already delicate issue being addressed in a medium best known for "dude, blow something up." Final Verdict 9.5
